Taxi industry body Gibela Namela Holdings and urban renewal movement Jozi My Jozi signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) on Thursday, 6 August, at Constitution Hill in Johannesburg. The agreement aims to enhance the taxi industry’s operations and foster dignity and safety for commuters within the inner city. This significant collaboration seeks to address long-standing challenges within the sector. The partnership will focus on establishing a more structured operating environment, intending to benefit both the taxi industry and its passengers by creating a more reliable and secure public transport system.
Industry Significance and Goals
Millions of people use minibus taxis daily in Johannesburg, making the industry a significant component of the city's transport infrastructure. This widespread reliance shows the importance of initiatives aimed at improving its functionality and safety. The recently signed memorandum of understanding establishes a business model framework designed to formalize various aspects of taxi operations. This framework is intended to bring greater order and efficiency to a sector that is vital for daily urban mobility. Its long-term goals include strengthening record-keeping through technology, enhancing operational compliance, and preparing the groundwork for future public integration and government subsidization of the sector. These steps are key for modernizing the industry and ensuring its sustainability. The partners anticipate technology will be central to these efforts, intending to establish a Smart Mobility Transit system. This system aims to initiate digital record-keeping and create the foundation for modern electronic ticketing solutions within the taxi industry, streamlining operations and improving the commuter experience.
Pillars of the Agreement
The agreement between Gibela Namela Holdings and Jozi My Jozi is structured around four main pillars: Project Dignity, Project Protect, Project Heal, and Project Learn. Each pillar targets a specific area of improvement within the taxi industry and its operational environment. Project Dignity focuses on enhancing public spaces by aiming for cleaner environments, infrastructural upgrades, and more consistent cleaning and maintenance schedules for inner-city taxi ranks. This initiative seeks to create more welcoming and respectable waiting areas for commuters.
Project Protect is designed to improve high-traffic commuter zones through enhanced coordination among queue marshals, which is expected to reduce congestion and improve passenger flow. This initiative will also implement stricter on-the-ground security measures, complemented by the installation of solar lights and smart safety cameras to bolster surveillance and deter criminal activity. Project Heal addresses the key aspect of driver welfare, providing support for mental and physical health. It aims to improve the overall wellbeing of professional taxi drivers, recognizing their demanding work conditions. Project Learn will introduce specific road safety education and training programmes tailored for these drivers, intending to improve operational safety and driver competence, thereby reducing accidents and enhancing service quality.

The taxi industry is one of Johannesburg’s most important economic sectors, according to Jozi My Jozi CEO Innocent Mabusela. Its broad reach and daily impact on the lives of millions highlight its economic and social significance. Jozi My Jozi will collaborate with taxi associations across the city to enhance various operational aspects, ranging from safety and cleanliness at taxi ranks to driver well-being and skills development initiatives. This full approach aims to uplift the entire ecosystem of the taxi industry. This partnership builds on previous community engagement efforts by the urban renewal group. Last year, Jozi My Jozi partnered with the South African Heart Association to conduct the Check My Beat – Heart Health Tracks campaign. This initiative established mobile screening centres at key transport hubs, including Bara Taxi Rank in Soweto and Park Station, providing health assessments and medical support directly to taxi drivers. These past efforts demonstrate Jozi My Jozi’s commitment to improving the lives of those working within and relying on the city's transport sector.
