South Africa is set to experience a varied weather pattern this weekend, with significant differences expected across its provinces on Saturday. Gauteng will see mostly fine and warm conditions, a forecast mirrored in the North West province, which is also predicted to be fine and warm. In contrast, the Western Cape is bracing for distinctly wintry weather, characterized by cloudy skies and morning mist in places, particularly over its southern areas.
Northern Regions Remain Warm
Mpumalanga and Limpopo are forecast to be fine and warm, though morning fog is expected in the eastern parts of both provinces. Temperatures could also become hot in the Lowveld. Gauteng is expected to experience a high UVB sunburn index on Saturday. Further east, KwaZulu-Natal will see a very high UVB sunburn index. Looking ahead to Sunday, fine and warm conditions are predicted to dominate the northern and central regions of South Africa. Temperatures will be warm to hot in parts of Limpopo and Mpumalanga on Sunday.
Wind and Rain Threaten South
The Free State province is forecast to be fine but windy, with temperatures ranging from cool to warm. The Northern Cape will experience partly cloudy and cold conditions in its south-western parts during the morning, while elsewhere in the province, it will be fine and cool to warm. Strong winds are also anticipated in the extreme east of the Northern Cape, and the extreme south-west of the North West province will be windy.
The Eastern Cape is expected to be one of the more unsettled regions. Its western half will see cloudy skies with morning fog in places, leading to partly cloudy and cool conditions. In contrast, the north-east of the Eastern Cape is predicted to be warmer. Along the coast west of Gqeberha, there is a 30% chance of light rain at night. The rest of the Western Cape will be partly cloudy and cold to cool. A 30% chance of isolated rain is forecast for the south-western Cape on Saturday, particularly towards the evening.
Eastern Cape Warnings Issued
The eastern half of the Eastern Cape is expected to be partly cloudy with temperatures ranging from cool to warm. Morning fog is also anticipated south of the escarpment within the province. Windy conditions are forecast for various locations in the Eastern Cape, with strong winds identified as a major feature along its coast. Gale-force winds are possible in places along the Eastern Cape coast. A Yellow Level 2 warning for damaging winds has been issued across parts of the Eastern Cape, specifically affecting Joe Gqabi and Chris Hani districts, Nelson Mandela Bay, and several coastal municipalities. Another Yellow Level 2 warning covers damaging winds and waves from Plettenberg Bay to Port Alfred starting mid-morning, extending towards Kosi Bay during the evening.
Sunday Outlook and Coastal Conditions
KwaZulu-Natal is expected to experience fine and warm to hot conditions on Sunday, with cloud cover increasing in the east during the afternoon. The interior of South Africa will remain largely dry. Along the Eastern Cape coast, windy conditions will persist, with rough seas and strong south-westerly winds creating hazardous conditions for coastal activities and navigation. In KwaZulu-Natal, coastal winds will strengthen from the south-west in the afternoon, spreading northwards. Cooler air will remain closer to the southern coastline. Morning fog and coastal cloud are also anticipated in parts of the south and east. The Western Cape is forecast to be partly cloudy to cloudy at times, with cold to cool temperatures. Light rain is developing over the south-western parts of the Western Cape.
