Isolated to scattered showers and thundershowers are forecast to develop over Gauteng, the Free State, North West, Limpopo, and Mpumalanga on Saturday. The South African Weather Service issued a Yellow Level 2 warning for severe thunderstorms, specifically targeting the eastern parts of KwaZulu-Natal. KwaZulu-Natal will experience fine weather at the start of Saturday before cloud cover increases from the south during the afternoon, preceding the expected unsettled conditions.
Central and Eastern Showers
Rain chances of approximately 30% are anticipated across much of South Africa's interior. Gauteng is forecast to have a cool day, starting with morning fog patches in its eastern areas before cloud cover increases during the afternoon. Later on Saturday, isolated showers and rain are likely in Gauteng, accompanied by a moderate UVB index. Mpumalanga and Limpopo will remain partly cloudy and cool to warm, with fog expected over the Highveld and central areas early in the morning. Isolated showers are predicted mainly over the western sections of Mpumalanga and Limpopo, while the Lowveld region will experience warmer temperatures. The Free State and North West provinces are set for cold to cool conditions with scattered clouds and isolated thundershowers developing through the afternoon and evening. Isolated showers and thunderstorms may still develop over the central and eastern interior of the Northern Cape.
Coastal and Warning Areas
Parts of the southern and eastern coastline, particularly KwaZulu-Natal and the eastern Eastern Cape, face a higher 60% chance of rain and thunderstorms. The Eastern Cape is forecast for a colder weekend, with showers and thunderstorms becoming more widespread across the eastern half of the province. Rain chances in the eastern Eastern Cape will range between 30 and 60 percent, especially along the Wild Coast and adjacent interior. Isolated showers and thunderstorms are also anticipated across much of KwaZulu-Natal, becoming scattered in the eastern regions where rainfall could be locally heavy. Severe thunderstorms may bring heavy downpours, frequent lightning, damaging winds, and small hail, posing a risk of localised flooding and potential damage to infrastructure and informal settlements.
Western Regions and Winds
The Northern Cape and Western Cape are expected to begin the weekend with cloudy skies and areas of fog, particularly over their western and southern districts. Conditions are then forecast to gradually improve, leading to partly cloudy and cool weather across both provinces. Along the coastline, winds will maintain a moderate to fresh strength, blowing from the southeast. Fine weather is anticipated over much of the western interior on Sunday. As cooler weather settles in, winds along the coastline are expected to gradually shift from southerly to southwesterly directions.

Looking ahead to Sunday, cooler air is expected to continue its spread across South Africa. Cloudy and cool conditions, accompanied by isolated showers, will persist over the eastern provinces and along the southeast coast throughout the day. Motorists are advised to exercise caution in regions affected by fog, heavy rain, and potential localised flooding, particularly in eastern KwaZulu-Natal and along parts of the Eastern Cape coast.
